Query letters must be accompanied by the following information:

• Outline or Synopsis
• Author's biography, including published credits
• Three sample chapters, including Chapter 1
• Ways the author will help with marketing and publicity
• A table of contents and index for all nonfiction works
• A self-addressed and stamped envelope for reply

Please include a self-addressed reply postcard if you want Harbor House to acknowledge receipt of your materials.

We will review only those submissions that include the above information. All manuscripts, fiction and nonfiction, must be typed in double-spaced format with pages numbered from beginning to end and accompanied by a self-addressed and stamped lettersize envelope. Due to recent changes in postal regulations, effective immediately we will no longer be able to return manuscripts or other submitted materials. Do not send us any original materials--they will NOT be returned to you.

Harbor House editors will not accept manuscripts submitted for review on electronic disk or by e-mail. Editors also do not accept manuscript queries by phone or e-mail.

We do not accept collect phone calls nor do we discuss book ideas by telephone. If you need to follow up your submission with additional information, please send a postcard to the acquisitions department.

We cannot offer critiques of manuscripts we choose not to publish, nor can we offer advice on

• How to get started writing a book
• How to find a ghostwriter or collaborator
• How to find another publisher

We will not consider manuscripts more than 375 pages long. Manuscripts consisting of fewer than 300 pages for fiction and 250 pages for nonfiction stand the best chance of serious consideration. If your manuscript is being simultaneously submitted to other publishing houses, please let us know.

Please allow at least eight weeks for responses to query letters and proposals, and 30 to 36 weeks for responses to manuscripts, should we invite you to submit yours. If at any time prior to the completion of the review process you want your manuscript returned, please send a letter to the acquisitions department. Calls to the acquisitions editor for the status of your manuscript are strongly discouraged. Please send all update requests by traditional mail.

Harbor House publishes a wide range of trade books each year, but is especially interested in developing its list of titles in the following areas:

Social Commentary
Civil War fiction and nonfiction
Thriller fiction
Horror fiction
Unexplained Occurrences

We do not publish books of story collections, poetry, romance, science fiction or erotica, novellas, textbooks, cookbooks, guidebooks, graphic novels, children's books or previously self-published works in any genre.
