Harbor House author nominated for Literary Award
AUGUSTA, Georgia — James Reger, author of the Civil War novel Baptism at Bull Run, is one of twenty finalists nominated to receive the prestigious W.Y. Boyd Literary Award for 2005.
Donated by William Young Boyd II to honor excellence in military fiction, the literary award recognizes the service of American veterans and military personnel and encourages the writing and publishing of outstanding war-related fiction.
Baptism at Bull Run, a blistering re-creation of that ferocious and pivotal battle, was released by Harbor House in March 2004 as the inaugural title for the publisher’s Civil War Classics series.
James Reger, a San Diego-based teacher who has authored several non-fiction history books in addition to Baptism at Bull Run, had two great-grandfathers distinguished in battle during the Civil War – one with Jeb Stuart’s cavalry and the other marching with the Stonewall Brigade.
"It is indeed an honor to even be nominated for the W. Y. Boyd Award," said Reger. "Especially when it has been previously granted to writing giants such as James Brady, James L. Nelson, and a host of other premier authors who have contributed so much to our appreciation of the pains and passions of the warfare which has been required to keep America free."
The winner of the W.Y. Boyd Literary Award receives $5,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement, which will be presented by the American Library Association.
