Deadlands: No place to start a family

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The planet formerly known as Earth lies scorched and barren. Human survivors of the final world war that gave birth to this anti-Eden are forced to live in anthill-like cities underground, ever on the defensive against rotters – an unstoppable army of mindless corpses that roam the surface.

This bleak and threatening world is the setting for author Scott Johnson’s second horror novel, Deadlands, scheduled to arrive in bookstores this fall.

Deadlands is also the debut novel of BatWing Press, a new imprint from Augusta-based publisher Harbor House, designed to showcase the best in horror fiction.

Johnson, a natural-born spinner of frightful yarns, is the author of American Haunting, as well as the biweekly column "Cold Spots" for horrorchannel.com. He is also the pen behind the upcoming Mayor’s Guide series, a ghost story tour of favorite haunted cities.

"Be prepared to sleep with the lights on," said associate editor Crystal Wiggins. "Deadlands delivers all the cover-clutching scares readers have come to expect from Scott Johnson."

Born and raised in the swampland coastal town of Lake Jackson, Texas, an area rife with folklore and ghost stories, Scott Johnson now lives in San Marcos with his wife and two daughters.
