Rick Turnbull is the son of a career Army officer. He started writing in the eighth grade under the tutelage of Eliot Wigginton, the celebrated founder of Foxfire Magazine. In 2001 one of his short stories won a Georgia Writer's Associate Award. His service as a crew chief on C5-A cargo jets during the Vietnam War inspired Gum's Story.

He lives on a small farm overlooking Horse Creek in Burnettown, South Carolina, with his wife, daughter and two dogs.
