Eleanor West has participated in an assortment of preservation efforts, foundations and projects, as well as several creative endeavors. She organized the address for preserving wilderness on barrier islands, and appeared as a key speaker at the Marshlands Conference in 1968. She wrote, narrated and co-produced a film titled Search for Ecological Balance in cooperation with Dr. Eugene P. Odum on the subject of the preservation of the coastal area. She also conveyed Ossabaw Island to the State of Georgia, making Ossabaw Island the first Heritage Preserve property under Georgia’s Heritage Trust Program.

West helped to create The Ossabaw Island Foundation, which oversees and operates the programs which bring thousand of people to the Island to study, pursue projects and learn; The Ossabaw Island Project, which allowed people of creative purpose in all disciplines to pursue their work at Ossabaw; The Genesis Project, which enabled qualified people to carry out projects in the sciences, arts, and humanities; The Professional Research Program, where qualified scientists and students studied Ossabaw’s environment and conducted non-disruptive experiments; and the Public Use and Education Program, which arranges week- or day-long visits to Ossabaw for the general public.

West assisted in the production of numerous films which highlight the sculpture and architecture of the Italian Renaissance, and also worked on the production of films on two contemporary artists, Harry Bertoia and Arnold Blanch. In addition, she authored two books for children, including Maria Bosomworth and William Rogers, which received the Award of Excellence from the 1976 Southern Books Competition.

West has served on the Board of Directors for the Franklin Settlement, the Boys Republic, the Roeper School for Gifted Children, and Brookside School Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She was a Chair for the American Red Cross Nurses Aides and the Detroit Chapter of Planned Parenthood.

West’s many awards and recognitions include a Gold Metal from the Michigan Academy of Arts and Sciences for her contribution to the arts and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation in March 1995, recognizing her long-term stewardship of a historic property.

West currently resides on Ossabaw Island in Georgia.
